Tongabezi

Saturday morning we flew to Livingstone, Zambia. We were driven to our accomodation of Tongabezi Lodge along the banks of the Zambezi River.

After getting settled in our rooms, we had time to explore the main lodge and the lookout, which had hammock chairs and a loveseat, as well as a telescope for viewing the surrounding area. We were greeted by Vervet monkeys on the way to our cabin, before we headed out that evening on a sunset boat ride.

The vistas were amazing, like something I'd only seen in an issue of National Geographic. They induced a real feeling of serenity. The night noise was a concoction of chirping geckos, singing cicadas, grunting hippos, singing birds, along with the gentle lapping of the river water.

The next day we awoke early to go fishing, although our skills proved lacking and we caught nary a fish.

We did come across a number of hippos and crocodiles. In fact a large herd of hippos were living in the shallows of the Zambezi within sight of where we were sleeping.

Midday we paddled canoes to an island in the river which lay between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although we came quite close to the Zim side, we were only allowed to be on the Zam.

We were fed a "picnic" lunch, which was really more of a gourmet buffet. We ate under a huge beautiful tree. Have I mentioned the scenery was breathtaking?
